What is FrontPage Web Hosting?

FrontPage Web Hosting refers to using a hosting provider that has the FrontPage Server Extensions installed on their web servers. FrontPage hosting enables you to:

  • Administer FrontPage-extended webs - This includes setting permissions for authors, administrators, and website visitors.
  • Author FrontPage-extended webs - This includes automatically maintaining hyperlinks, generating and maintaining navigation bars across all pages, and automatically formatting pages to give them a polished appearance.
  • Add functionality to your website - This includes interactive discussion groups, hit counters, search forms, etc.

For a list of FrontPage web hosting providers, please view our Comparison Chart.

Important: When you choose a Unix host for FrontPage web hosting, always remember to follow their instructions for activating FrontPage extensions on your account. (read their "welcome email" or check your control panel).

Publishing your Website using FrontPage:

In Internet website publishing, the most common method is for an author to create a FrontPage-extended web on the client computer. Then, when the web is completed and tested, the author publishes it to an Internet Service Provider's web server by using the Publish Web command in the FrontPage client.

Authoring on a local web server or file system is efficient because it does not require authors to be connected to their Internet Service Provider (ISP) while they work on a FrontPage-extended web.

The Publish Web command copies the FrontPage-extended website's files from a client computer's file system to a destination web server in batch mode. By default, only new or changed pages and files are copied. Pages and files deleted from the source web are also deleted from the destination web.
